What is the Senior Road User Hub?

The Senior Road User Hub has been developed after an in-depth research study was conducted with Victorian Seniors on their experiences with driving, their health and generally getting around on Victorian roads.

Participants told us that they wanted access to information that was written for them, as well as an objective way to reflect on their own driving abilities in a way that could help them plan for future mobility needs.

That’s why we have brought together information and a quiz about health, driving and being a safe road user, on a platform that was built with senior Victorians in mind.

How was the quiz made?

The Senior Road User Hub (SRUH) Quiz was developed by Monash University Accident Research Centre and was informed by research from specialists in the fields of geriatrics, psychology and road safety.

We began development of the quiz questions by reviewing a number of research findings focusing on the connection between drivers’ self-assessed abilities, comfort in driving and their real-world driving measures of self-regulation.

Self-regulation is important for seniors because previous research has demonstrated that many drivers become aware of their age-related declines in functional capacities and adapt their driving patterns to match these changes. This is particularly true with changes in vision; seniors recognise good vision as one of the most critical elements for safe driving and often cite poor vision as a key reason for reducing driving at night or in poor weather.

However, each person is different and there are large differences in how prepared people are to self-regulate. People’s readiness for self-regulation can change based on their age, gender, medical conditions and comfort levels with driving.

The SRUH Quiz focuses on self-reflection, helping people to self-regulate and prepare for changes to their travel behaviours.

The SRUH Quiz is not a diagnostic or assessment tool and users should consult their doctor or other healthcare or licensing professionals about their driving if they have any concerns.
